 Gullah Book of the Dead

Gullah Book of the Dead is a photographic exploration of the stories and lives of Charlestonians who are interred at local Peninsula burial grounds.  The project was organized by Family TYES SC.

The project was funded by an Enough Pie Community Project grant.  Four local youth have been documenting various findings at four cemeteries.

In addition to photography show @ 1600 Meeting, an online exhibition, and preparing for the National Day of Listening, the team also went on field trips, had fellowship over lunch. We also met with youth from other parts of the local area for a collaborative photo walk of downtown Charleston.

Listen to two of our youth as they describe a visit to a local art exhibition.

Something I especially liked at the art gallery was the lady that did the thread art. I was amazed at how she just put them in a line and glued them onto construction paper.  I thought it was more to it than that! I also liked the man that did the collage.  His art was pretty and cool.  I liked the way he just put all different types of paper together to create something that was very unique, all out of what seemed like regular scraps of paper.  Overall, I had a very good experience at the art gallery.  It was my first time, and I would definitely go again.

When I went to the art gallery, I learned about the different styles of art, like the thread art.  The lady there made a doll out of thread, and I was shocked to see that it was even possible to make a doll out of thread.  The colors and pattern of the different  art was really nice, and I enjoyed seeing them.  But the best art of all was the zig-zags and the butterflies.  Those were amazing!  They were the best I had ever seen.  I wish I could buy a few of those.
