John L. Dart Branch Library

Sometimes the treasure is found in in pursuit of the destination, rather than the point of destination.  Although the students were primarily concerned with making observations at the various cemetery visits, new areas of research emerged.  Why was it easier to read some headstones? Why had some headstones changed in appearance over time? What were the headstones made of? How much do they cost? These were some of the questions that led to a visit to Worth Monument Company. The history of the business and the process of creating monuments was explained. Several types of monuments were examined. "Choosing a stone", remarked our Guide, "is like making a final tribute to a loved one and it's [like] a comforting experience moreso than either the funeral or burial...like closure".
